What is a Covenant Community?
A fruit of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, a Covenant Community is a group of Christians who have been led by the Lord to bind themselves to Him, His Church, and also one another in the form of public commitment. Its call is to live a Christian lifestyle, through openness to the charismatic gifts, worship and prayer, sharing and teaching, and support for one another.
What is a “covenant?”
Covenant means relationship. A covenant is a solemn promise between brothers and sisters when they enter into a community relationship with each other. A covenant document will outline the solemn promises of the relationship.
What does the Mother of God Community, a Catholic Covenant Community, mean?
In describing ourselves as a Catholic Covenant Community, we see our community life as lived under a covenant. We enter into a solemn promise before the Lord and with our brothers and sisters to live the life of the Community. This covenant does not override the vital covenant established with God through the Church. We believe that the Lord has called us together as a Community within the Church.
How do I become a member and participate in the Life of the Mother of God Community?
There are various ways to participate in the life of the Community.
- Affiliate Member: During the affiliate stage, brothers and sisters begin participating in community life and receive instruction in Christian living. The affiliate stage is followed by the "underway commitment."
- Underway Member: Underway Members participate fully in community life and receive instruction in community living. The affiliate and underway stages provide a time for personal growth in the Christian life and for discernment of a call to join the Mother of God Community.
- Covenant Member: is a brother or sister who after completing this time of learning and discernment are asked to make a full "public commitment" to live as a Covenanted Member of the Mother of God Community. The public commitment is open-ended in that members agree to remain part of the community unless the Lord clearly leads them elsewhere. Covenant Members will renew their commitments on the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God.
- Associate Member: is a more limited form of Community membership for brothers and sisters who do not wish or are unable to make a public commitment to become a Covenanted Member of the Mother of God Community.
Are the children of Covenant Members also Covenant?
In the covenant of marriage, children, the fruit of the Marriage Covenant, are members of the family. Similarly, children’s participation in the life of the Community is through their parents.
